Dublin Local Climate Camp Group Minutes: 2nd February 2010, Seomra Spraoi
Attendance: Ed, Ag, Eo, Br, Ca, R, Mi, Ci, Ke, I, Am
Agenda: - Report back from Galway all-Ireland meeting
- Gauge enthusiasm for working on making a climate camp this year
- Planning outreach activities
- Discussion about the group’s identity
- NUI Maynooth Green Week 22nd February
- Hosting next all-Ireland meeting
- organising a direct action campaign not centred on a camp
- using our time and resources to build up local groups rather than make a camp
- Climate camp party: workshops in the afternoon followed by a party in the evening.
- Comedy night and musical fundraisers.
- Talks from climate scientists who work in Ireland, such as John Sweeney. These lectures could be in the style of the EPA lectures, but with as much a focus on climate justice as on science, and focusing on a different aspect each month.
- Talk and film showings in universities such as Trinity prior to the skills weekend. Reaching out to students is important. It would be best to start by calling the SU of the institution.
Report back from Galway all-Ireland meeting:
At Galway it was decided to plan a Skill-Share weekend in April in conjunction with Gluaiseacht. Cork and Galway were suggested as locations, but some believed that the most people especially students would attend if it was held in Dublin. Ke agreed to contact Ma about Dublin hosting the Skill-Share weekend.
Alternatives to having a camp included:
There are plans for a cycle tour of Ireland in May, beginning in Dublin and finishing in Rossport, Co. Mayo, in support of Shell to Sea. The cycle tour will travel to towns on the way to Mayo, talking about the issue and perhaps offering free bike repairs. Climate Camp may agree to support this tour.
Gauge enthusiasm for working on making a climate camp this year: Mi: the principal organisers were too few and they worked too hard to the point of burn out. More people will be needed this year.
Ca: many tasks have been done and will require far less work than before, such as the booklet. Working group reports will help new people perform the tasks more efficiently. So far process, site crew and research have submitted reports.
About half the group assembled said that they were willing and able to put in substantial amounts of work, and the other half were willing to help somewhat.
As for sites, Mi suggested the CRH concrete factory near Laytown, Co. Meath.
Some argued that it will be necessary to devote the most part of the next all-Ireland meeting to discussing the camp.Planning outreach activities:
Why outreach? To gain new participants to help with a camp and to spread the word about climate justice.
What types of events?
Most of the group were interested in planning the details of outreach events. We agreed to meet again in a week, that is Tuesday 9th February at 18:30 in
Seomra Spraoi, with preliminary research done and letters written, etc.
Ci reported that some in the Dublin cycling campaign would like to work with climate camp to put on subversive stunts for national bike week in June. Discussion about the group’s identity:
No changes were made.
NUI Maynooth Green Week 22nd February:
Climate Camp stall consisting of photos (to be arranged by I), a leaflet (to be created by Ca and Eo), newspaper articles, and a banner. We will be in a room with stalls by Wavebob, EPA, Irish Wind Association, Amnesty, Friends of the Earth, and 10:10.
Hosting next all-Ireland meeting:
The group agreed to be willing to host the next all-Ireland meeting, and to advertise it on the internet and using posters. TASKS: - Ke to contact Ma about Dublin hosting the Skill-Share weekend.
Climate Camp stall photos, banner and articles to be brought by Ian, leaflet to be created by Ca and Eo.
- The group agreed to host the next all-Ireland meeting, and to advertise it.

Dublin Outreach Group Meeting
9th February 2010, Seomra Spraoi
Attendance: Eo, B, C, R, Mi, I
Public lectures by climate scientists:
Letter should be short and communicate
- familiarity with their work
- who we are
- what we want from them
- what we plan
Ca to improve I’s letter to a professional standard and incorporate decisions taken at this meeting.
Candidates:
John Sweeney: expertise in climate change in Ireland. Works at NUI Maynooth.
Peter Lynch: climate variability and models; how climate modelling works.
Ray Bates: climate feedbacks, the climate impacts of solar variation. Worked for Neils Bohr Institute and NASA. Has previously spoken on how the scientific consensus was reached.
Richard Tol: Energy economics and economics of climate change. Works for ESRI. Earmarked for further audit by our group.
Francis McGovern: Air pollution and climate change. Works for the Environmental Protection Agency.
Initial lecture topics: - Climate change: effects on the world and in Ireland, plus positive feedbacks.
- How scientists arrived at a consensus on AGW theory.
The schedule of lectures will be determined by the scientists’ timetables but one should take place before the skill share weekend. It could be a good idea to encourage the audience to speak amongst themselves immediately after the lecture about the topic. Email addresses of interested people could be harvested. The climate camp documentary could be contextualised and shown after the main science talk, because it is short.
Climate Camp Fundraisers: It was suggested that we have gigs centred on comedy not music. Free venues include the bar next to the Twisted Pepper (Abbey St), Le Cirque (Camden St), Peadar Kearney (Dame St).
Ca is to line up some suitable comedians. PJ Gallagher and “Willa” were suggested. Student outreach:
We need to get our name out to students in the weeks leading up to the skill share weekend. It is important to involved students as the agents of outreach to students where practical.
Suggested topics include:
“Climate Exchange: Skilling up to build our own future”
“The survival of my generation is not up for negotiation! Why climate justice really matters.” I is to contact environmental or activist student groups in Irish universities and colleges. All-Ireland meeting after party: Reggae, dub and Irish trad DJ sets suggested. Mi and R to work on this. Use as a fundraiser for Climate Camp.
