2. Climate Camp 2010

Possible
Locations Pros/cons:
  • Bellinaboy/Glengad/Rossport - Pros
    Supports an affected community
Shell to Sea have made this issue well-known already, could attract big crowds
Has myriad facets: climate justice, environment, economic sovereignty, anti-corruption
    Shell supports carbon trading
Shell to Sea were very supportive of the camp.

    Cons
Risk losing Climate Camp identity when we are still establishing it
Heavy Garda presence may frighten away families and non-activists
    Far from Dublin.

  • Shannonbridge Pros
Bogs are a very important issue, and (culturally) uniquely Irish.
    Familiarity
    less work to do.
Better integration with community - John Luker likes us!
    Chance to advocate paludiculture
    – the cultivation of useful crops on greenhouse gas-absorbing wet peatland.

    Cons
Getting too tied to that place and becoming a single issue camp
Land owner might not like us any more

  • Lanesboro Pros
Bogs are a very important issue, and culturally Irish
    – this offers a way to continue the peat issue without being tied to Shannonbridge.

    Cons
    Becoming a single issue camp
Likely Garda intrusion, since arrests were made there last year.

  • CRH Concrete Pros
Near to Dublin, thus would be easy to travel to.
Near to the rich vegetable fields of North Dublin (local food available.)

    Cons
Building industry downturn has reduced its relevance
    its production has almost halved.

  • Moneypoint Power Station Pros
    It’
s Ireland’s biggest single fossil fuel source of emissions
    It
    ’s on the Shannon.
Recent Shannon flooding highlights climate issues and government
    ’s inadequacy
More accessible for Munster/Connaught dwellers than some other locations?

    Cons
Apparent lack of decent available land nearby.
    Far from everywhere.

  • IFSC (Carbon Trading Centre of the future) - Pros
It’s a serious proposal (IT January 8, 2010) that should be resisted.
In Dublin, and near major bus and train stations = high attendance.
Possible camping available in Fairview Park, or Dartmouth Square. Also suggested was a camp site on the northern outskirts of the city.
Greater public awareness of the camp and relevant issues.

    Cons
Difficulty in getting the right to camp near there.

  • Dublin Bay Incinerator Pros and cons as for IFSC above, also
Offers opportunity to support a local campaign of resistance.
    Issue is widely understood.

  • Braemore Port Pros
Opportunity to highlight the shipping issue and try to stop a project in its tracks.
Much research already done by Ian L.
The port will transfer containers from intercontinental vessels to coastal ships for onward transport to Europe.
    Near to Dublin.

    Cons
    Limited local resistance
    landowners bought out already.
    No visible construction work yet.

  • New Ross Bypass Pros
Highlights expensive and needless road expansion.
    Near public transport.
Local resistance exists already, thus a possible local site.

    Cons
    Bypasses are widely considered “
    necessary”.

  • A5 upgrade, Co. Tyrone Pros
Highlights expensive and needless road expansion.
Is funded by both UK and Irish governments.
Provides an opportunity to camp in NI.
    Resistance campaign exists already.

    Cons
Might be difficult to connect to southern people.
    Far from Dublin area.

  • Sligo Airport - Pros
    Airport expansion issue.
Local resistance exists already, thus a possible local site.
    Scenic coastal location.

    Cons
    Far from Dublin.
    Far from public transport.

Research group to conduct research. Individual members will take on possible targets. IFSC and Incinerator are already taken on.

3.
Proposed Dates and Length:

Bank holiday weekend - 30th July-2nd August?

Conflict with Irish Green Gathering at Glendalough

17-22nd August

Equivalent to last year’s date, but it’s half a week + a weekend

3-5 days rather than 9

A lot of effort with site building would be difficult to justify if it’s only 3 days long.

However, the seven days of workshops last year burned people out somewhat.

Solutions:

Hold site building workshops to cater for those who want a longer camp and for general interest

Meet-and-greet days at beginning and end with focus on 3-4 days in middle – again, ease into camp and cater to those who want a longer camp.

Workshops

- Two at the same time rather than three

- Six per day + kids workshops over 4 days

Additional information:

2 marquees definitely available from Mike

Budget: €12,000 : €5,000 from Gluaiseacht in 2009. Additional money came from fund-raising at camp and before camp.

Comments: Review of last year’s budget break-down, by the new finance group, will make this year’s planning more efficient.

Fund-raising plans by local groups need to begin soon.

4. Working groups

Media, legal, process, finance urgently need volunteers.

Outreach and research are more secure, but welcome more help.

Outreach group to use facebook to advertise for “volunteers urgently needed” in those working groups.

5. Deadlines

Deadline for presentation of target research: Skill Share Weekend, 23rd April 2010.

Top Priorities for research

CRH Cement

IFSC Carbon Trading

Deadline for research on particular sites: 15th June.

Tasks

Outreach group to use facebook to advertise for “volunteers urgently needed” in those working groups.

I C to email all in the research group to help individuals in it choose.

I C to set up a calendar facility for the website to help identify events that might help or clash with ours.
